Choosing paint colors – the terms used when talking about colors

Choosing paint colors is one of the more difficult tasks that will handle when you are planning to renovate a room. However, this task becomes considerably harder when you are not aware of the terms that you are being used.

Here is a short list of the most common terms used when you are talking about paint colors:

The term hue is used when you are referring to pure color. This means that this does not include the shade or tint. For example, the hue may refer to different colors such as red, yellow, blue or green.

Contrast
Contrast is a term used when you are referring to how visible one color is when used on top of another color. The paint colors that have the greatest contrast are the colors that are on opposite sides of the color wheel. That is the reason why they are also called complimentary colors. On the other hand, if you want colors that are have low contrasts then you may want to select colors that are side by side on the color wheel.

What is your value?
In color, the value describes the lightness or the darkness of the color. Upon visiting a paint store you may notice the Sherwin-Williams color strip. This is used as a guide to see the different values of a color. A monochromatic color scheme is used when you are using one color with different values.

How warm or how cool?
Being a war or being a cool paint color is usually refers to the feeling that it has on people. Red and orange is considered warm because they encourage people to be active and socialize. On the other hand, blue and green are considered cool colors because they give the feeling of relaxation and ease to a lot of people.
